Term 4 Overview 

Reading

This term, Grade 5 students will be learning about a range of CAFÉ reading strategies…
  • Comprehension
  • Accuracy
  • Fluency
  • Expanding Vocabulary

At home:  Students are expected to read a minimum of 20 minutes per night for at least 5 nights each week and fill in their diary for each night that they read. On three of those nights, students are expected to write a short comment that supports their practice of their individual Café Reading Goal. You can find their goal in their Café Reading Journals. 

Specifically, this term, we will be looking at Research Skills and how we are able to find relevant and accurate information through various sources including the internet. 
Students will also have their Individual Reading Focus on CAFÉ Reading Strategies.

Numeracy

We will be learning about and working with Number and Algebra and    Multiplication and Division. Specifically, we will cover;
  • Multiplication and Division
  • Geometric Reasoning
  • Chance and Data
At home: Logon to Essential Assessment and complete the My Numeracy Tasks aiming to achieve a minimum of 70% on tasks to achieve a trophy.

Spelling

The Sound Waves Program is used throughout the week to connect graphemes and phonemes in order to increase our spelling and reading abilities.

At home: This week students will have new spelling words each week. Students are expected to practice weekly list words by completing one spelling activity a week. This will be a part of their homework.
Students will complete a spelling test every Friday.

Topic Studies

This term we have a Science Spectacular. Students have ‘taste tested’ the four categories of Science:
1. Chemistry
2. Biology
3. Physics
4. Earth and Space
They will each choose an area of interest to investigate and present their findings through an experiment. 
There will be a partnership between home and school to investigate and research as well as practice their experiment.
