Our Chinese Language Program provides an opportunity for students to develop cultural understanding and learn a second language from Foundation through to Grade 6.
Students undertake a wide range of learning experiences, from basic conversation phrases and vocabulary to Chinese dance, cooking, plays and many other opportunities that come their way! |
Prep
In Term 1, Prep grade students learning Chinese will have lessons that cover the teacher's self-introduction, classroom rules, language concepts, and Chinese phrases and characters. The students will start by introducing themselves in Chinese using the phrase “我叫”The students will learn the concept of different languages and be introduced to the importance of Chinese New Year and its traditions through the story of Nian. The final lesson will be a revision of all the previous lessons to reinforce the concepts and phrases learned in Term 1. Grade 1&2 The Chinese lessons in Term 1 for Grade 1 students cover topics such as the zodiac animals, numbers and age, and self-introduction. The first three lessons will focus on the zodiac animals and their associated stories, with a variety of activities such as games and worksheets to reinforce learning. The next three lessons will cover revision of numbers and age, and self-introduction, including pronoun usage. The lessons are structured in a way that involves engagement, knowledge building, reinforcement, and extension activities. Grade 3 & 4 During Term 1, Grade 3 & 4 students will be learning about Chinese culture, particularly around the Chinese New Year. The students will learn about the customs and traditions of the holiday, including the red envelopes, zodiac animals, and kitchen guard. They will also learn about other customs such as cleaning, eating lucky foods, and the significance of wearing new clothes. Additionally, students will be revising their language skills, focusing on self-introduction and family members as well as drinks in Chinese. There will be a variety of activities, such as group work, worksheets, and a board game, to help students understand and retain the information they are learning. Grade 5 & 6 In this term, grade 5&6 students will be learning about the traditional and modern aspects of Chinese New Year through the customs, traditions, and modern innovations. They will recap their knowledge of the Chinese New Year and learn about some old customs that are no longer followed. Additionally, the students will explore the modern aspects of the Chinese New Year, including the digital red envelope, and create a related product. Lastly, the students will learn new words related to occupations and express their dream careers. Through research and presentation, students will introduce their dream careers in Chinese and English. |
